Musical Director - Peter Taylor
Peter has been Artistic Director of the University of Sheffield Singers’ Society since September 2003. As a young fresher studying Environmental Geosciences in 1998, he joined the newly formed Singsoc in his first week, and before the first rehearsal was out he was on the committee as social secretary despite knowing no-one there! He moved on to become chairman for two years and to form Socii Cantorum (the society’s chamber choir) before moving home to the Midlands in 2001. There he gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Vocal and Operatic Studies from the Birmingham Conservatoire. However he had ensured his return to Singsoc by going out with and subsequently marrying a member of the new committee and in 2003 the committee invited Peter to take up the post of Artistic Director.
Peter has been delighted to conduct Singsoc in performances of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Haydn’s The Creation, Poulenc’s Gloria, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Andrew Carter’s Benedicite, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Coronation Anthems, and Fanshawe’s African Sanctus as well as many other concerts of mixed repertoire. He also spent 11 years as Musical Director of Hallam Choral Society.
As a baritone soloist, recent performances include Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Tucapsky’s The Sacrifice (in the presence of the composer), Bach’s Christmas Oratorio & St. John Passion, Britten’s The World of the Spirit, Charpentier’s Te Deum, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Gounod’s Messe Solennelle St. Cecila, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse & Paukenmesse, Handel’s Messiah & Dettingen Te Deum, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Faure’s Requiem. Peter has appeared as a soloist in venues across England including Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. Future performances as soloist include Haydn's Nelson Mass and Mozart's Vesperae solennes de confessore
Peter is passionate about educating people in the art and science of singing and particularly in encouraging the next generation of choral singers. He teaches privately from his home in Sheffield, and has in the past taught first study singing students at both Sheffield and Nottingham Universities. As Singing Project Co-ordinator for Sheffield, working for Sheffield Music Hub, he has responsibility for ensuring that every child in Sheffield has regular quality opportunities to sing throughout their school life from age 5 to 18.
