We're back, after what feels like a very long Easter, for more rehearsals! We are currently rehearsing in all three choirs for our concert on the 7th of May which is based on a Shakespeare theme. It is 400 years since his death this year, and so we thought it appropriate to commemorate and think about all of the songs using his lyrics that we love so much! After that it will sadly be the end of another fabulous SingSoc year, and the new committee will take over to carry things on. Before all that however, we have a very busy few weeks ahead of us - it is the SingSoc Ball this weekend (look out for some exciting photos on our Facebook page!), and our AGM on the 21st! We wish luck for all the candidates and look forward to an exciting new year with new people.
Thank you to everybody who came to our May 'Chiaroscuro' concert, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! This year we performed a wide ranging repertoire sourced from many different genres and time periods, but all linked under our theme of 'light and dark'. From the more modern 'Dancing in the Moonlight' and 'Mr Blue Sky', to more traditional work such as Elgar's 'Light out of Darkness' and Poulenc's 'Litanies à la vierge noire', our concert had it all! As ever, we collected money for our two amazing adopted charities: The Lary Project and In Place of War (formerly Change the Record). Make sure to check out some of our performances on our YouTube channel, and you can find out more information about our adopted charities here. Our May concert marks the end of our academic year, but keep checking back for news about the all-important Activities and Volunteering Awards, as well as information about your new committee.
This year we had lots of fun with all our annual festivities! They all started with our fantastic carols concert on the 12th of December. We had the wonderful Sheffield University Sign Language Society joining us to sign some of our songs, which you can check out on our YouTube channel. You can also find more information out about them on their Facebook page. During the concert our chamber choir Socii Cantorum performed some local Sheffield based carols including 'Oughtibridge' and 'Sweet Chiming Bells', as well as some more traditional carols.
After our concert, it was time for the long awaited carolling events! This year, we had five separate carolling events, so our calendar was very full. These included singing for the Bar One Christmas lights switch on, carolling in Sheffield town centre and, of course the renowned pub carolling, amongst other smaller events. This enabled us to raise a huge amount for our two adopted charities for this year: Change the Record and the Lary Project. You can read more about our current adopted charities on the 'Volunteering and Charity Work' section of our website.
SingSoc is again celebrating an award-winning night at the 2014 Activities Awards, presented by the Societies Committee at Sheffield City Hall!
For the second year in a row our society was awarded Best Performance, Musical or Dance Society, as well as picking up the award for Commitment to Inclusions. We also celebrated the work of Hailey, Charlotte and Helen as they were awarded Best Treasurer, Best Social Secretary and Outstanding Contribution to Societies respectively. We were also shortlisted for Best Society of the Year, but narrowly lost out to SUDS.
SingSoc was nominated for Best Performance, Musical or Dance Society thanks in part to our contribution to the SU, including our series of successful concerts, running our own Give It A Go event, and performances at Winterval Wonderland and Bar One’s Christmas lights switch on. Our volunteering and charity work also contributed hugely to our win, having raised a record total for our adopted charity, The Lary Project, through RAG. SingSoc has achieved so much as a society in this past year, and we look forward to ending our year on a high.
The SingSoc committee would like to thank everyone that has made this year such a success: our wonderful Artistic Directors; our fantastic accompanists and concert musicians; our committed choir members; and finally, our audience members from all of our concerts. You've made this year award-winning!
